Restorative Yoga
This discipline was born from the contribution of the guru B.K.S. Iyengar and the PhD PT Judith H. Lasater in the second half of the 1900s, but it immediately gained a foothold all over the world thanks to its great benefits.
The practice is based on a sort of paradox, according to which by doing nothing and remaining motionless one can expand one’s experiential field and energy.
In Restorative yoga the poses are made extremely comfortable through the use of supports, such as bolsters, cushions or blocks and are held for several minutes (from 3 to 20 min each). In this way the body can completely relax, abandoning tensions or involuntary muscle activations, leaving room for breathing and introspection.
It is good practice to choose a silent and dark space, or using a cloth to close the eyes, preferably in the heat and wearing comfortable clothes. The body is usually warmed up by a short, more dynamic introductory sequence, to then enjoy the total abandonment of static positions.
Restorative Yoga is often accompanied and enriched by targeted breathing or relaxation techniques (of which visualizations and Face Yoga are also part), in order to dissolve any residual tension and bring the body back to a state of optimal well-being.
